The reason nearly every AI startup builds a web app has nothing to do with customers. The web is where developers are comfortable. Herbert Roy George, Founder of KairosFS, saw the whole industry’s blind spot laid out on a trade show floor in Miami, where company after company demonstrated tools that could only live on a website. Each had automated the channel that was easiest to code for and assumed customers would follow them there. They do not.
“Your customers aren’t on the web,” George says. “They are on the phone.” A web-only AI is not a lighter version of the right product. It is a very good answer aimed at the wrong address, and a small business owner can tell the difference immediately, because their phone is ringing while the web form sits empty.
The Crowd on the Web Is All Vendors
The congestion George noticed in Miami was that the web looks crowded with AI companies, because it is the easiest place to build, which means everyone shows up there and competes for a channel their customers may never touch. He asks one important question: ask any small business owner where the leads actually come from. The water supply company, the cash loan business, or the real estate agent – none of them is winning customers through web forms. Those customers call, and they text. “If your AI lives only on a website,” George says, “you are missing where the real conversations are happening.” An AI that cannot pick up a phone is not just losing that market; it was never in it.
Automate Where the Volume Actually Is
Meeting customers on their own channels turns automation from a demo into leverage. George points to a client running a real estate operation entirely by herself, handling a volume that would normally demand a team. In one quarter, his AI took 548 of her calls. It qualified leads and rental applications, delivered lockbox codes, and handed her only the high-value buying and selling deals worth her attention. She kept the money and gave the low-margin repetition to the machine. That is leverage a web form could never deliver, for the simple reason that none of that work was arriving through a web form. Automation only pays where the volume already is, and the volume was on the phone.
An AI That Cannot Speak Spanish in Miami Has Already Lost
The last requirement is the one web-first thinking never even reaches. In Miami, most customers speak Spanish, and an AI that cannot conduct a phone call in Spanish has forfeited the market before the first ring. Multimodal, for George, was never a checklist of channels. “Multimodal is not just about channels,” he says. “It is about meeting people in the language and the format they prefer.”
Phone, SMS, email, chat, and the right language are not mere features; they are in fact the difference between operating where business happens and demonstrating a clever tool where it does not. The future of small business AI is not another website. It is an AI that picks up the phone, answers the text, sends the follow-up, and speaks the customer’s language, because that is where the customers were the whole time. Everyone else is still building for the address they wish customers used. To learn more, connect with Herbert Roy George on LinkedIn or visit KairosFS.
